Kiruba to give a talk at IIM Bangalore

Kiruba Shankar, CEO of Business Blogging Pvt Ltd, a social media consultancy. He is also the founder Director of F5ive Technologies, a firm specializing in Web Development. He is a co-founder of The Knowledge Foundation, a non-profit body that believes in the spirit of sharing knowledge. He is one of the guys behind Proto.in (Entrepreneruship event), BlogCamp, PodWorks, WikiCamp, BarCampChennai, MobileMonday Chennai, OpenCoffeeClub Chennai and the CC Salon. (Woww!! Kiruba did you leave something for us too??)

Now what has this man got to do with guest lecture at IIMB, you may ask? Well he is not restricted to just the above mentioned stuff. He currently teaches New Media at the Asian College of Journalism, Madras Advertising Club, SRM University and the International Institute of Journalism, Berlin. He is also into writing on technology. He currently authors a tech column at the New Indian Express and co-authors the NASSCOM Emerge blog. Phew!!

So, he has been invited to IIMB to share his passion for Social Media. Kiruba is going to throw wisdom nuggets on Social Media for Entrepreneurs for the IIM Bangalore crowd. More specifics later! As of now, the Business Blogging team cheers him for his talk (he has been claiming butterflies in his stomach since the invite appeared). But sorry Kribs, we do not have cheer girls for you ;)

Gap gives away 10,000 pairs of jeans

Well just after recovering from the new logo corporate fubar, Gap is up with some amazing deals to please its piqued customers. It has grabbed the new facebook deals (did I mention something new? well will cover about this in the next post) with both hands.

Gap is giving away 10,000 pairs of jeans for free. All that one has to do is check in their facebook places. So you didnt get one? dont fret, any person who checks in will get 40% off. The deal is available nationwide in the US from east coast to west coast and every store in between, and all you have to do is  show any Gap employee your check-in and you could get your free pair of basic 5 pocket jeans with a value up to $59.50. Sad this does not exist in India.

These deals show how powerful facebook can be in the media advertising space now that it has opened deals in facebook places. There is a buzz that facebook is in talks with brands to accept facebook points in return of real cash! If this happens,in future  facebook will turn to be a very powerful tool in the transactions of goods.

You could find your next job through social networking

Other than keeping you connected with your friends, peeking into their photos and planning outings together, Social media can now actually help you get your next job! At least a total of 60 percent or higher of all jobs are gained by social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn.

LinkedIn, a business social networking site, was founded in May 2003, and it’s main use is for professional networking. It has also had more than 75 million registered members as of August 2010 alone. The main feature that distinguishes LinkedIn from other social networking sites is its professional outlook. It is built to help people find professional or business contacts, to help employers seek out prospective employees and look up in depth profiles and recommendations. It is the perfect place for an employer to list job openings and screen through profiles at the comfort of their office.  It also opens a window for employers to expose their profiles and brands.

Facebook remains by far the most popular amongst the sites, from a wide range of students to CEOs. Some companies use the site as a strong platform to continue striving. Management consultancy KPMG administrates a graduate page for any future recruits, and includes features such as a mini mind workout, audio and tax, and even a interview skills section!

Queen on Facebook

Well the Royal Family seems to utilizing the social media to its hilt. It already has a presence on Twitter, Youtube and other social media platforms. Last night, The Royal Family joined th Facebook bandwagon. The page- www.facebook.com/TheBritishMonarchy has videos, photos and the Court Circular, the 200-year-old authoritative record of engagements.

The good thing is that, it a page and not a profile. So you cannot send ‘friend requests’ but can ‘like’ the page. In just a day after the page went live, it contains 148,149 fans!! much faster than any other brand!
